Chapter 15 Calamity

“Over here!” Renegade, or Lucas, waved. A broad smile on his face.

The gesture also attracted half of the cafeteria’s attention. Skylar glanced at Malcolm, who was staring at the table of uncommons with his mouth open.

“Come on,” she hissed and made her way to the group.

The table was long and slim, with a bench on each side. Most of the space was occupied by D.U.R.M.A. uncommons. Skylar counted four of them. She knew Lucas and Nadine already and took a while to recognize one more, the other one she had no idea who he was.

They were all dressed in street clothes. T-shirts and jeans, and some had jackets against the air conditioning. They were chatting amongst themselves, though sometimes an operative would stop by and say hi. They looked young and normal, with age differences no larger than five or six years.

She quietly sat down at one end of the bench, next to Nadine who lifted her purse to make space. Malcolm sat at the empty seat opposite her. He was beyond nervous, while Skylar liked to think of herself as calm.

Almost as soon as they took the seat, the elevator opened. An operative stepped out and headed straight for Malcolm. Skylar eyed him in alarm.

“Are you the driver of the rental truck with the license plate 743PKE3?“ He asked in a politely low voice.

“Uh…yes?” Malcolm exchanged a look with Skylar.

“It can’t be parked there for more than 72 hours. You can move it to the garage on Level Two, since you’re here for official business.”

Malcolm nodded and stood up. He looked half disappointed and half relieved.

“See you later,” he said to Skylar. “Oh, I almost forgot. Here’s the keycard. We both have a room on Level 7.”

The keycard was printed with the D.U.R.M.A. insignia, an Araesow Delta, and a series of numbers. Skylar nodded at him.

“Are you okay?” Nadine asked. “I heard about what happened.”

“I bet everyone heard what happened,” Skylar said, trying to act casual. “The way they look at me like that.” The rest of the table was glancing at them, taking in every word. “The operatives.” She thought to clarify. “They were staring at me even in the hallways.”

“Not everyone,” Nadine said. “They are looking at you because you’re new. Not every day we get a new uncommon.”

“Oh.”

“A power like yours make people curious, you know?” Lucas chewed on a bit of burger. “Did I say it’s cool? It is. They’re thinking of making you a crimson.”

Upon the mentioning, the uncommons all slowed their eating to observe her.

“What?” She asked. “I’m not…it’s not that…”

“The rating is kind of bullshit.” The guy down the table shrugged. “It’s telling us nothing useful, other than the commons’ opinions on the powers. The KSP classification is pretty good. You’re a Kinesis?”

Skylar nodded, not knowing what else to say.

“Time control, I heard.”

She nodded.

“So, show us your power.” He suggested, crossing his arms. He had the half-interested look, while the others looked interested.

“You won’t be able to see it,” Skylar said sourly.
